John Sexton, Ansel Adams technical assistant, explained some of Ansel’s feelings on Black and White one day in class. He said, Ansel believed all photography was a step away from reality, by choosing to capture a scene in a square or rectangular box, it is not reality, it is the artists vision, making an image Black and White takes the image one step further away from reality and in some cases, one step closer to the artists vision.
Thai New Year, Songkran. This was an unusual year to say the least. With a global pandemic raging, and Thailand … More
This post is a collection of a few select images made in rural Thailand while living one year with COVID-19 in our lives. It is not a timeline of the pandemic….
I started out 10 years ago with documenting change in rural Thailand as one of my main goals. In the last ten years, I have produced over 90 thousand RAW images of life in rural Thailand. Documenting these changes became a goal in the first year after I moved to rural Thailand. As an outsider, it was easy for me to see the changes that were coming. Plowing the land with a water buffalo or hand tractor had to change, old ways could not continue for long.
Much has changed in the nine years I have been documenting rice farming. Hand tractors have given way to modern machinery. Four days to plow the fields with a hand tractor has become just a few hours with modern machinery. Two weeks of hand harvesting is now a half day with a large machine harvester.
I have witnessed many Thai ordinations in the ten years I have lived in rural Thailand. Each time I notice a significant change in a man’s personality after the head shaving ceremony, and putting on the white robes of a novitiate Monk. I can understand and appreciate the reason the act of becoming a monk is so esteemed in Thai society. It is a profound, sometimes life-changing event for many Thai men.
Now be honest, we’re among friends … When was the last time you had a burning desire to smoke tobacco mixed with a couple of hot Thai chili peppers? The answer for me was – the thought never even crossed my mind, and I grew up in the 60’s! So if I had never heard of it, my initial thought was, wow, that’s out there!
Small production Green Rice is usually hand planted and then hand harvested as the young rice plants mature at different rates, a few days or weeks apart. Workers walk through the fields and select plants that are mature enough for processing.
Fire ants are large red ants that are quite aggressive with a painful bite that causes swelling that can last for days. The cannibals of Papua New Guinea or Fiji might have agreed with me when I say the best revenge is to eat them. Or at least their eggs.
Today, in rural Thailand, Grandma Siri and family got a new set of Spirit Houses to replace the ancient ones that finally gave up the ghost(s) a while back. This morning was the blessing of the new spirit houses.
I think a person could probably survive for several months during the fruit harvest season on what is produced from the trees in my front yard …
I enjoy making photos of women working in the rice fields of Thailand. That is obvious when one looks at … More
We have all heard the statement, man, that is a powerful image. What makes it powerful? The story it tells, yes, but how does the image tell that story? By that I mean how was the image captured to tell a powerful story?
Wat Ban Rai, the Elephant Temple is located in the Dan Khun Tod district of Nakhon Ratchasima, Korat, Thailand, about … More
The amusement park has been billed by some as a vision of heaven and hell. I would think a more traditional Buddhist explanation would be a visualization of karma. What can happen to a person if they do evil or good.
When I was first told about the candle festival by my wife she thought I might want to see and photograph a large parade made up of 2 story tall candles. I said yes, it was a good idea, but I want to go the day before and photograph the candles being made…
(Warning Some Nudity) The Buffalo races in Chon Buri had been on my bucket list for quite some time. The idea of young men racing Water Buffalo sounded like it would make some interesting images. I was not disappointed…
One of the more bizarre events I have attended in Thailand a couple of years ago is the tattoo festival at Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Chaisi at Nakhon Pathom. Once a year devotees travel to Wat Bang Phra, where a ceremony is held to recharge the magical tattoos of the participants.
Today’s post is just a short video with some stills made early this morning as we visited a market about 30 minutes from our rural home. An example of everyday life in rural Thailand.
Prasat Muang Tam is a Khmer temple in Prakhon Chai district, Buri Ram Province, Thailand.
It is primarily in the Khleang and Baphuon styles, which dates its primary phases of construction to the late 10th and early 11th centuries.
In today’s post, I’m going to talk about a key element of Black and White photography, contrast, and how to find it. One of the easiest ways to find dramatic shots is to look for shadows. Look for the dark areas in the photo that can direct attention to the highlights. A person’s eye will …
