June 20, 2020, Nakhon Nayok, Thailand.
The rice planting season began today for Siri and family in rural Nakhon Nayok, Thailand. A local tractor operator plowed the first of 40 Rai of land that will be used for growing several varieties of rice. The harvest will probably take place in late November or early December.
Thus begins the cycle I have witnessed and documented for 10 years in rural Thailand. I watched farmers plowing with hand reactors when I first arrived in rural Thailand, and have witnessed the family farmers move into the 20th century and use modern machinery for many tasks. Planting, tending the fields, and harvesting will still be done by hand on Siri and family’s leased plots of land.
